PROJECT:

2009 – Historic Gasoline Service Station Underground Storage Tank (UST) Rupture Effecting Municipal Redevelopment Project

SITE:

Tenafly Borough, Bergen County, NJ, ANCO Project #15523-RW

PROJECT VALUE:

$120,000

CLIENT:

East Edge LLC & Tenafly Borough

DETAILS:

A catastrophic release of approximately 4,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline occurred onsite in July of 1994. A hole was discovered through the invert at the strike plate location of the 8,000 gallon fiberglass premium grade gasoline UST. The Borough of Tenafly sought to acquire the property to develop into a small park. ANCO was hired in early 2009, displacing earlier consultants who still had not completed three dimensional source delineation across the entire site. ANCO responded with two geoprobe units and continuously sampled soils to vertically and horizontally delineate the petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil including liquid- and residual-phase gasoline and diesel fuel which was encountered in a smear 3 one extending 8’ into the water table. The remaining contaminant source was excavated, 200 tons of soil were treated off-site, and post-excavation soil sampling showed the soil impact was removed to the most stringent soil criteria. Next, an array of temporary wells was installed and sampled to screen the dissolved contaminant plume. Additional water-table and vertical extent monitoring wells were installed in two episodes, on- and off-site, and sampled to delineate the dissolved plume geometry. Chemical oxidation agent was injected to speed remediation of remaining contaminants. Hydraulic slug testing was conducted and a CEA was calculated. A down gradient sentinel well was installed, sampled and found to be clean. Active site remediation is completed, pending an approved CEA/NFA letter from the NJDEP.

PROJECT:

2008 - DPW Yard Oil Storage Tank Replacement And Remediation

SITE:

Harding Township, Morris County, NJ, ANCO Project #14630-NBCN

CLIENT:

Harding Township, Tracy Toribio 973-267-2448 and Patty Keikenweitz 973-267-8000

PROJECT VALUE:

$18,000

DETAILS

ANCO has performed several projects over the years for Harding Township.  Most have been petroleum site remediation involving soil and groundwater.  This project at the Department of Public Works yard involved the replacement of a 1,000-gallon underground tank with a double walled above ground steel tank.  The new tank was anchored to a new concrete pad, ad it was piped to the oil burner.  Instrumentation included high level alarm and interstitial leak detection.  The UST was found to have  small leak with oil concentrations in the soil less than the soil remediation limit, however the leak was reported to the NJDEP and a Remedial Investigation Report was submitted to the NJDEP.

PROJECT:

2002 - Emergency Spill Response Due To Truck Overturn Into Pond At County Park

SITE:

Mountainside, Union County, NJ, ANCO Project #9038-ER

PROJECT VALUE:

$32,000

OVERSITE CONSULTANT :

Prime Environmental 973-326-1660

DETAILS:

An 80,000 lb. truck ran off the road into a small pond at the Watchung Reservation.  The contents of his saddle fuel tanks quickly leaked into the otherwise pristine ecological receptor.  ANCO boomed the spill utilizing boats and skimmed the oil off the water surface, first with oil absorbent spill pads, then with compressed air plus vacuum trucks to extract free product.  The truck had crashed through a guardrail thusly ripping fuel lines thereby affecting soils.  ANCO’s wide track excavator was utilized to dig silty organic surfacial soils from the affected bog.

PROJECT:

2000 - Former Oil Terminal Demolition And Remediation And CEA Management

SITE:

Springfield Township, Union County, NJ ANCO Project #8626-RW

CLIENT:

Springfield Township – Bruce Bergen (Township Attorney) 908-276-8855

PROJECT VALUE:

$145,000 (ongoing)

DETAILS:

ANCO was retained in 2001 to address any NJDEP requirements needed to prepare the former Shiable Oil Company site for site redevelopment as a township firehouse.  While the tanks had been removed, and a limited amount of soil remediation work was performed by another environmental company, the site was still heavily contaminated with heating oil and gasoline.  Free Product was found beneath site structures and floating on the water tale.  ANCO demolished the structures, removed a significant quantity of asbestos containing material, excavated 350 tons of contaminated soils, then performed open pit free product extraction. ANCO installed six monitor wells, implemented a detailed multiple monitor well based Remedial Investigation Workplan, and performed an ecological receptor evaluation which resulted in the issuance of a classification exemption area with an eight year duration.  The project is currently up for its biennial recertification, and is under directive for continued investigation.  The project is ongoing.
